Clean Garage
Posted by: admin on August 24, 2015
We’re in the thick of another hot, sunny summer in the GTA -- which means plenty of folks are outside on the patio, heading for a dip in the pool, getting ready to head out (or maybe head back) on a vacation with family…

but there’s something else that lots of people are doing that they definitely shouldn’t: storing dangerous or hazardous items in their garage!

To help keep you, your family, pets, guests and neighbours safe, here’s a list of 3 things you should NEVER store in your garage under any circumstances:

  1. Propane Tanks

Regardless of whether they’re full, partially full or empty, never store propane tanks in your garage. Fumes from propane tanks seep out over time, and you could ignite them while starting your car, gas-powered lawnmower or other appliance (weed-wacker, hedge trimmer, etc.). Yes, we all hate having a rusty propane tank, but the risks of storing one in your garage far outweigh the rewards – in fact, when you consider that an explosion could cause serious injury or even death, it’s really a no-brainer.

  1. Canned Goods

While storing canned goods in your garage may seem like a great idea – especially if you don’t want to trudge down to your basement or if there’s no room in your bursting-at-the-seams kitchen, the fact is that this could lead to disaster. Why? Because canned goods will spoil and even start cooking at high temperatures – and we all know that with the heat and humidity combined, temperatures in the GTA can easily climb over 30 degrees, and sometimes even over 40 degrees. So no matter how convenient or space-saving it might be, keep your canned goods inside.

  1. Paper Products

Think the garage is the ideal place to store old tax returns, photo albums and other paper products that you’ll sort out “one of these days”? Think again! Pests, flies and vermin feast on paper, and can turn your garage into an all-you-can-eat critter buffet. You’ll not only lose your valuable documents, but you’ll probably have to call an exterminator, too. It’s better to store your documents in an insulated attic. If you store them in the basement, make sure they’re elevated and won’t be damaged if there’s a flood. Or better yet, rent some storage space for a few bucks a month and enjoy peace of mind.
