In day-to-day life, there are some very clear signs that we’re not supposed to do something -- such as proceed into an intersection when the light is red, or cross railroad tracks when the bells are ringing and the lights are flashing.

Yet, there are many instances when the “be careful!” or “watch out!” signs are not as obvious. We don’t hear loud warning bells or see bright red lights. However, we nevertheless have a kind of “sixth sense” or “gut feel” that something just isn’t quite right. And as we all know from experience, when we ignore those early warning signals, we almost always regret it.

To help you stay safe and get the solution you need and deserve, here are 4 “red flag” phases to watch out for from a garage door company:

“Privacy restrictions prevent us from showing you references or testimonials.”

Yes, maintaining customer confidentiality and privacy are top priorities. But no, they don’t prevent any credible garage door company from sharing references with you. Any company that says otherwise simply doesn’t have good (or any!) references to show, and they’re trying to hide that fact from you. Lying to potential customers is not a good way to build a relationship!

“I can’t help you until you tell me what your budget is.”

A reputable garage door company may ask you about your budget, but only so that they can focus on providing options to you that are within your price range. However, a company that won’t even provide information without knowing how much you have to spend is revealing that their top (and probably only!) objective is to get as much money from you as possible. What’s more, some particularly unscrupulous companies may try to adjust their prices based on how much you have to spend. This is totally unethical and sometimes even illegal, but unfortunately it happens.

“We have another company handle our service calls.”

Simply put: a garage door company that doesn’t have its own qualified, trained, in-house and full-time service team is not a real garage door company. The last thing you want when you need service or maintenance is to be passed from one company to another. You deserve more than that, and what’s more, you paid for more than that!

“We can only give you an estimate after you place a deposit.”

Don’t just walk away if you hear this or something like it…run! You should never be asked to pay anything merely to find out how much something will cost, or what your various options are. Only after you’ve made an informed decision that’s best for you, will it be necessary for you to make a deposit – and never before.

The Bottom-Line

Choosing a company to repair or replace your garage door should be a safe and stress-free experience. After all, you’re in control and the choice is yours! Unfortunately, there are some companies out there that try hard to make you forget this key fact. Some are being deceitful. Others just aren’t good at their jobs. Either way, you deserve much better, and that means you should look elsewhere for your solution.

At Atlas Overhead Doors, we would be honored for the opportunity to demonstrate what makes us one of the GTAs most respected and trusted garage door companies. We’ll gladly share our references and testimonials with you (in fact, you can read some of them here!). We’ll also provide you with a free estimate, and we never base our prices or commitments on your budget. And of course, when it comes to service, we really are second-to-none!

Give us a call today – we’re here to help.
