Keeping your garage door in good condition is an easy job for any homeowner. Following these 5 DIY tips will prevent your garage door from having major problems. Be proactive by keeping up with yearly maintenance.

Inspect the track for Dents

The tracks that your garage door sits on, must be smooth and dent free, in order for your door to function properly. Any dents or cracks in the tracks will eventually cause your garage door to disengage from the tracks.

How to fix dents: If you come across any dents, try banging them out, with a rubber hammer. If there are more serious problems with your door, that you feel need professional attention, please contact us today!

Clean the Tracks

Dust and dirt can accumulate inside the track grooves, over a long period of time. This can cause the tracks to become blocked and slide unevenly. Eventually, the tracks will become banged up.

How to clean: Try to clean the tracks approximately once a year, using a bristle brush or some type of scraping tool. Once the dirt is gone, give the tracks a good rinse with any household cleaning product, and then leave the tracks to air dry for a few hours.

Garage door Lubricant

Many people wonder if track lubricant is necessary. We say, “YES!”

Applying lubricant to the tracks will make everything run smoothly.

How to lubricate: Garage door lubricant is available in the form of a spray and can effortlessly be applied directly to the tracks.

Paint the Door!

We’ve said it before, but it’s definitely a must! Weather, as well as regular wear and tear, can affect your garage door. If you see any cracks in the paint, make sure to scrape, sand and repaint your door (both the inside and the outside), to prevent further cracking or peeling.
