It’s a scenario that nobody wants to experience: your automatic garage door, which has given you plenty of reliable service, suddenly decides to “take a break” and leave you in the lurch.
However, before you panic, utter some colourful words that will have you depositing a loonie or two in the “swear jar,” or worse, decide to give your stubborn garage door a push or kick, here are 5 simple garage door troubleshooting tips that could solve the problem easier and quicker than you imagine:

1. Check the power source.
Has the motor unit become unplugged? Or perhaps a fuse has gone out, which can happen in some older homes – particularly on cold, wintry mornings. Check the power source and see if this solves your problem in a matter of seconds (of course if you wish, you can tell your family that you spent hours sleuthing and solving the problem!).

2. Check your remote
Your garage door remote is battery operated, and designed to work within a certain range. However, as your battery weakens over time, the range becomes smaller and smaller. If you find that this is the cause of your garage door issue, simply replace the battery. (Note: for your security, you may also have to reprogram your remote. This is a quick and easy process that is described in your owner’s manual.).

3. Check the limit switch.
Your garage door has a “limit switch,” which is designed to prevent it from closing on people, pets or anything else that might be in the way. However, if the limit is set incorrectly, your garage door will receive the wrong instructions, and for no apparent reason it will stop before it reaches the ground (of the down limit is misadjusted), or before it opens all the way (if the up limit is misadjusted). Fortunately, fixing this is simple, and our experts would be happy to get everything back in perfect working order. If you’re mechanically inclined, we can also give you clear step-by-step instructions on how to fix this on your own.

4. Check the safety sensors.
On either side of your garage door, you’ll find “safety sensors” that are designed to prevent it from closing when something (or someone!) is in the way. If the beam of the safety sensors is blocked, the garage door won’t close – even if you tell it to get to work. Check to see if the safety sensors are blocked by leaves, dirt or any other debris. If so, clear the obstruction and see if your problem is solved.

5. Check for door track obstructions.
Take a look (a flashlight may help here) to see if there’s anything obstructing the track door, such as stones or dried paint. If so, then try removing them – but without putting excess force on the track. The last thing you want is to put your own safety at risk, or cause costly damage.
