Snow on Driveway leading to home
Posted by: admin on September 30, 2013
While winter conditions in the GTA aren’t as extreme as they are for our neighbors further up north, the fact remains that when Old Man Winter wants to pay us a visit, there’s more than enough shoveling and shivering to go around.
However, did you know that your garage door needs a little extra attention during the colder months? It’s true, and here are 5 tips to maintain your garage door in winter:

1. Keep the gears, hinges, track, bushings and rollers appropriately lubricated with a silicon-based spray. The word “appropriately” is important here, because you don’t want to over-lubricate, nor do you want to lubricate any plastic components.

2. Clean the weather stripping using a clean cloth and a mix of water and mild all-purpose cleaner. While you’re cleaning, inspect the weather stripping to ensure that it hasn’t broken or cracked, as these can allow for drafts that will increase your home’s energy bills.

3. Apply a thin silicon spray to the bottom weather stripping to prevent it from sticking to the ground. You can also apply a thin spray in between the door’s panels to prevent frost build-up.

4. Inspect your garage door’s mechanism for debris, ice or any other blocks. The last thing you want is to have an unresponsive garage door when it’s freezing outside!

5. Open and close your garage door every day to remove any built-up frost, and to ensure that everything is working properly (i.e. door is opening and closing at consistent speed, there are no unusual or loud noises, etc.).

Prevention is the Key
