To you and your family, your garage door is an important part of your home that provides essential protection, promotes energy efficiency, and adds lasting value and appeal. That’s the good news.
The bad news, is that there are a very small number of people out there who see your garage door as something else: as a means to breach your home security, and steal your valuable property.

Fortunately, there are some simple and effective ways for you to keep your family and property safe. Here are 5 tips to keep in mind at all times:

1. Your garage door opener’s access code is no different than the PIN on your debit card, or the password to your email address and other accounts. As such, it’s important that you choose a code that would-be thieves can’t guess (i.e. don’t choose your house number, digits of your phone number, the numbers on your license plate, etc.). Also remember to change your code periodically. It only takes a few seconds.

2. When leaving your car with a parking attendant (such as at a hotel, their airport, at an event, etc.), remember to take your garage door remote with you. The small device is lightweight and easy to store in a purse, bag or pocket.

3. If you plan on going on vacation, or will be away from your home for any extended period of time, either unplug your garage door opener or activate your wall vacation lock console security switch (you can purchase this very handy accessory from us).

4. Install a bright motion-detection spotlight that illuminates your garage door and the surrounding area. Just be sure that you install it beyond the reach of a would-be burglar, and remember to test it weekly to ensure that it’s functioning properly.

5. Ensure that your garage’s standard door (i.e. the one designed for people, not for cars) has an industrial-strength lock, and that the door’s material is strong enough to withstand prying attempts. You may also want to install a second motion-detection spotlight that illuminates this door as well.

Ultimately, when you show would-be burglars that you’re paying close attention to garage door security, they’re likely to back away — and search elsewhere for an easier target.
