It’s been on your mind for months -- maybe years -- and finally, you’re ready to make your dream of a flawless, freshly-painted garage door a reality.

Or perhaps you’re thinking of moving, and have discovered that one of the simplest and least expensive ways to boost your home’s “curb appeal” is by having a beautiful garage door. Whatever your inspiration, you’ve got your paint, brushes, thinner, overalls, and you’re ready to go!

However, before you unleash your inner Rembrandt, here are some helpful garage door painting tips that you should know before you start – so that you’ll save time, stress and money:

  1. Plan to paint when the forecast calls for at least 48 hours of dry conditions. You also want to avoid days that are either too cold or too warm, as either of these extremes can negatively impact your results (plus make it pretty uncomfortable for you to be outside!).
  2. Sunlight is your friend, so plan to paint as early in the day as possible. You don’t have to be up at the crack of dawn, but it’s generally a good idea to start at around 7am or 8am if possible.
  3. Prepare your garage door surface by sanding away any peeling paint. If your garage door is made of metal, then pay attention to any rust and make sure that you cover any rush patches with primer. You can purchase all of this at your neighbourhood hardware or home improvement store.
  4. Although you’re eager to start painting, before you dip your brush ensure that your garage door is clean. Use a very mild detergent, and carefully rinse and dry as well. Click here for some great garage door cleaning tips.
  5. Tape the edges of your garage door so that excess paint (or just the occasional wayward brush stroke!) won’t stain your brickwork, aluminium siding, or any other surfaces that should remain 100% paint-free. It’s also a good idea to place a tarp on the ground so that your concrete or asphalt doesn’t end up speckled with paint.
  6. If you’re aiming to significantly change the color of your garage door, or if the current color is dark (e.g. dark brown, dark blue, etc.) and you want to modify the shading, then you’ll need to apply a coat of primer. Again, you’ll find this at your neighbourhood hardware or home improvement store.
  7. FINALLY you’re all set to paint! We recommend a latex-based paint, which you should apply in thin, even layers. Latex-based paint dries rather quickly; however, you want to ensure that each layer dries before you apply another one (or else you may actually lift-off paint). It’s also a good idea to use both a roller and smaller brushes. Use the roller for the large middle section of your garage door, and smaller brushes for the edges.
  8. Once you’ve finished, we recommend you wait at least 24 hours before opening your garage door – 36 or even 48 hours is even better. As such, remember to remove anything from within your garage that you’ll need over the next 1-2 days (e.g. lawn mower, rake, garbage bins, and so on).

And that’s all there is to it! If you follow the above steps, you should be well on your way to dramatically improving the look – and probably boosting the value – of your home.
