Even though the calendar says that Spring arrived a couple of months ago, after what could be the coldest and longest Winter in recent memory, it’s only barely beginning to really feel like Spring has spring –birds are chirping, grass is growing, the days are getting longer and longer and, of course there’s that annual rite of passage known as Spring Cleaning!

Indeed, many homeowners across Canada are trading in their shovels and ice scrapers for brooms and sponges. If you’re among them and are eager to restore your beloved home’s sparkle and shine, then here are some simple yet effective garage door Spring Cleaning tips:

1. Only use a very mild cleaning solution and steer clear of any harsh detergents; especially if your garage door is made of steel. It’s generally safe to use any cleaner that contains less than 0.5% phosphate, and is properly diluted with water (see the instructions on the bottle for the correct ratio). Plus, we recommend that you choose a biodegradable cleaner so that you don’t damage the environment.

2. Use a clean, soft sponge to wash the entire garage door. Start at the top, and work your way down. If you’re using an older sponge, ensure that you carefully clean it. Any dried on or embedded dirt (which can be hard to see) may scratch your garage door’s finish. Plus, instead of capturing dirt on the sponge, you may in fact be transferring it to your garage door – which is the opposite of what you want! Also pay attention to your garage door’s weather strips.

3. If you come across any hardened dirt, instead of scrubbing it with your sponge you may find it simpler to dislodge it with your bare hand.

4. Rinse your garage door with clean water. Start at the top and work your way down (just as you would if washing your car).

5. Once your garage door is fully-rinsed, dry it with a clean cloth or you can use a car chamois. As with your sponge, ensure that your cloth/chamois is clean.

Depending on the size of your garage door and the amount of dirt and salt, this Spring Cleaning process may take anywhere from a few minutes to about half an hour. Your reward will be a beautiful, sparkling garage door that adds beauty and appeal to your home – plus, you’ll help prolong the functional life of your garage door, which protects your investment!
