Two small identical black infants on white floor

Parents are all-too familiar with child-proofing their homes; especially since infants, toddlers and youngsters share an insatiable curiosity for potentially dangerous places and things -- like the hot water heater!

However, there’s a key area of the home that parents sometimes forget to include in their child-proofing plan: the garage.

Indeed, while the garage may be a pretty ordinary space for most of us, it’s often a fascinating, mysterious place for kids who could quickly find themselves in harm’s way, or worse, injured and in need of anything from first aid, to a trip to the emergency room.

To prevent that scenario from unfolding, here are 10 things that parents should do in order to child-proof their garage, and keep their family safe:

  1. Test your automatic garage door opener’s reverse feature by breaking the sensor beam while the door is on the way down. If the system is working correctly, the door should stop immediately and begin reversing. If this doesn’t happen, or if the garage continues closing for a second or longer after the sensor beam is broken, then call for expert service right away.

  1. Make sure that your car doors and trunk are always locked. This is especially important, because many cars have rear fold-down seats that allow trunk access from the inside (i.e. for transporting large items).

  1. Do not store any chemicals or other potentially harmful materials within reach. Better yet, find a way to cover them with a cloth so that children don’t even think about trying to get them.

  1. Be extra careful with stowing your lawn mower in the summer, and snow blower or shovel in the winter. All of these can tip over and cause injury.

  1. Lock any appliances in the garage even if they aren’t in use, such as a refrigerator, freezer, washer, dryer, and so on. Kids love playing hide and seek and may see these as an “ideal” hiding places.

  1. Keep all workshop tools out of reach. This includes shop vacs and brooms as well.

  1. Store buckets upside down so that they cannot be filled with liquids, which could then be swallowed, splashed on skin, or possibly pose a drowning risk.

  1. Lock all recycling and garbage containers. These definitely need to be off limits!

  1. Beware of storing sports equipment within easy reach. Some items, like baseball bats, golf clubs, hockey sticks, and so on can cause an injury.

And last but certainly not least:

Talk to your kids and clearly explain garage safety “do’s” and “don’ts”. Obviously, very young children won’t be able to understand certain concepts, but they can still get the basic message. Make talking to your kids about garage safety something that you do on a regular basis — because prevention is always the best way to avoid bad news!
