Man putting fingers in ears

One of the best features of a quality, insulated garage door is that it helps block out external ambient noise – whether that means kids playing street hockey, teens testing the limits of their new car stereo system, or just everyday sounds like passing cars, barking dogs, and so on.

However, what happens when instead of blocking irritating noise from interfering with peace and quiet, your garage door is the source of that irritating noise? Unfortunately, that’s what happens when your garage door opener needs a little TLC. Fortunately, there are some easy things you can try to make this annoying problem go away:

1. Typically (though not always), loud garage door noise is the result of excess vibration. As such, start by checking all bolts and screws to make sure that they’re tight. Of course, you want to avoid over-tightening these either, as you may damage the threads and/or your track, opener and other components.

2. Try lubricating your garage door’s springs, rollers and tracks. Also pay attention to the hinges between the door panels, too. We recommend that you use heavy duty silicone spray instead of WD40 and other similar solvents, since they can break down and dry out, as well as attract dirt and dust. You’ll easily find heavy duty silicone spray at your local hardware or department store.

3. If your garage door uses metal rollers, consider changing these to nylon, which are significantly quieter. As a bonus, nylon rollers don’t need to be lubricated.

4. Check the balance on your garage door by pulling the emergency release cord and opening it manually about half way up. If it’s properly balanced, it will stay relatively stable. If balance is an issue, however, the door will begin to fall. (Important note: fixing an unbalanced garage door can be complex, and should only be done by a trained technician – otherwise, you may end up damaging your garage door even more!)
