The leaves outside are changing colours – and the Leafs at the ACC are back on the ice – which means that winter is just around the corner.

And while we’ll hopefully be spared the unprecedented cold and ice that we endured last year (keep your fingers crossed!), we all know that even the mildest GTA winter is going to have its fair share of frigid days and nights.

As such, in addition to stocking up on mittens, hats, scarves and of course a trusty windshield ice scraper or two, your pre-winter checklist should include ensuring that your garage door is suitably insulated, so that you’ll keep Old Man Winter at bay – while you keep your home heating costs in check.

If you decide that insulation is the way to go, here’s what to do:

  1. Measure your garage door panels from the inside (which is where the insulation will go). Use an actual tape measure here vs. “guestimating” the length.
  1. Head to your local hardware store and buy your insulation. While there are several types available, the most popular for garage doors are reflective foil insulation (which is sold in rolls), and polystyrene foam (which is sold in sheets). Keep an eye out for the highest “R” value possible, which refers to the insulation’s efficiency. Also pick up some aluminum foil tape or double-sided tape.
  1. Measure and mark the insulation to fit each panel, and then cut it using a utility knife. It’s OK if you end up with a bit more insulation than you need, as you can trim this off later.
  1. Place the installation up against each door panel. If possible, tuck the insulation into your garage door’s metal frame. If this isn’t an option, then match the insulation up against the recesses of each panel. As mentioned, if you have any excess insulation here, simply trim it away.
  1. Install the insulation to the first garage door panel using the aluminum foil tape or double-sided tape. Repeat this with all of the other panels.

And that’s it! In less time than you probably imagine, you’ll take a pre-emptive strike against whatever winter throws your way this year – and for years to come. And as a bonus, you’ll discover that a well-insulated garage door can also help lower your cooling bills in the summer, as your air conditioner won’t have to work as hard to compensate for cooler air escaping through your garage door.

Insulation Questions? Call Us!

No matter how well you insulate your garage door, you may still find that cold air is seeping through into your garage – and into your house. This may be due to an incorrectly installed garage door, or because you require a garage door made from stronger, more insulated material (this is particularly the case with older garage doors).

If you have any questions about garage door insulation, give us a call. We can also send out one of our trained and friendly specialists, who will give you advice and options to help you and your family stay safe and warm this winter!
