Broken Garage Door Opener
Posted by: admin on January 28, 2014
While power outages are rare occurrences across the GTA, when they happen -- such as at the end of 2013 -- they can bring the entire communities and neighbourhoods to a standstill, and lead to everything from inconveniences to hazards.
And near the top of the “uh oh” list for many individuals and families during a power outage is when their vehicle literally becomes trapped behind their automatic garage door.

Fortunately, this is a problem that you can usually solve quickly, easily and safely by following these 3 steps:

1. Start by looking for your automatic garage door’s emergency release cord. This is usually easy to spot, as it’s the only item hanging down from your door’s opener rail. It’s typically located right next to the area where your garage door connects to the door arm.

2. Once you’ve located the emergency release cord, pull it down to disengage the mechanism that attaches your garage door to the door arm. Please note that while the emergency release cord is designed to be reasonably resistant (so that it doesn’t get pulled by accident or as the result of a strong gust of wind), it should pull easily without any excess pressure or strain on your part.

3. Now, you can manually open your garage door by lifting it by the handle, which is typically located at the bottom. Your garage door should lift easily and smoothly, just as always does.

When the Power is Restored

Once the power is restored (hopefully sooner rather than later!), you can switch your garage door from manual to automatic operation through the following 3 steps:

1. Manually open the garage door all the way.

2. Push the button in your garage that opens the door.

3. Pull your garage door down until it engages.

An Important Final Note

Please keep in mind that if your garage door doesn’t have a manual lock, then once you disengage it (per the steps above), then it could be opened by anyone. As such, you may want to remove any valuables from your garage and put them inside for safe keeping until the power comes back. And of course, be sure to lock your car and activate its alarm.
