Ask the experts stamp

When it comes to home improvement, there are plenty of times when taking the do-it-yourself (DIY) route makes sense – and can help save hundreds or thousands of dollars, plus make folks feel like a home improvement rock star. However, there’s one task in particular that trips up even the most seasoned DIYer; let alone, those with less experience: garage door replacement. Below, we highlight the 5 key reasons why.

1. It’s Definitely NOT an Easy Job
The term “garage door” is a convenient way to refer to a highly complex, interconnected system of components. Each element – and there are dozens — has to be properly installed, adjusted and optimized in order for the system to function. Most DIYers don’t have the expertise to get everything right the first time (or the second or third for that matter).

As a result, the effort typically ends up taking much longer than planned, triggers plenty of stress and frustration, and usually ends up with having to call an expert installer, anyway.

2. It Can Compromise Safety & Damage Property
Many DIYers are surprised to discover just how heavy garage doors are. True, some materials are lighter than others (e.g. generally speaking, an aluminum door will be lighter than a solid wood door). However, any garage door is heavy enough to dent, damage, or outright crush anything that it falls upon.

Unfortunately and possibly tragically, a garage door that isn’t properly installed is a safety risk waiting to happen. All it might take is a strong GTA wind, nudge from a car fender, or slap shot from street hockey all-star to compromise safety or damage property.

3. It Can Cause Out-of-Warranty Damage
While garage doors are available in a wide range of prices, they aren’t “small appliances”. They’re an asset, which means that protecting the investment is a priority.

However, DIY garage door attempts can – and often do – lead to scratches, dings and broken components that aren’t covered by warranty, since they weren’t the result of defective workmanship. Once the damage is done, paying to fix and repair will almost always exceed the amount it would have cost for a professional installer to do the job right the first time.

4. It Can Turn into Tragedy
As noted above, garage doors are heavier than they look. And in addition, they have very tightly wound springs that can be extremely dangerous to handle. DIYers who don’t know precisely how to touch and setup various components risk insuring themselves, and winding up in an ambulance.

5. It’s Not a One-Person Job
Many DIYers enjoy the freedom of working on their own schedule. For example, they can put in an hour or two before work, pick things up again on the weekend (or between periods of the Leafs game!), and so on.

And while this is fine for some home improvement tasks – raking leaves, putting up Christmas lights, adding weather stripping to windows, and so on –garage door installation is definitely NOT a one-person job for DIYers (it may be for a professional installer, but that’s precisely because they are professional). As such, the freedom and flexibility that many folks love so much about being a DIYer doesn’t apply to garage door installation – because it can’t and shouldn’t be done alone.

The Bottom Line
There’s nothing wrong with strapping on a tool belt to fix a leak, change light fixtures, and take are of many other home improvement tasks. However, as noted above, garage door installation is not a DIY project — and people who don’t heed this advice often regret it.
