X, don't do it. Portrait of young man gesturing to cut it out
Posted by: admin on September 15, 2014
As we were all reminded by the epic winter of 2013/2014, winters in the GTA can be extremely cold. And even if we (hopefully) aren’t in store for ice storms and endless shovelling this time around, we know that Old Man Winter isn’t going to take an extended holiday.

However, no matter how frigid things get – and yes, there will be some mornings when Southern Ontario will feel like the South Pole – there’s one thing you NEVER want to do under any circumstances: warm up your car by leaving it running in your garage.

Why not? Well, aside from the damage it can do to your car, a running car can actually put you and your family’s (including your pets!) health at risk. And if you live in a semi-detached home or townhouse complex, you can put your neighbours’ health at risk, too.

Here’s what you need to know: cars emit carbon monoxide, which is an invisible and odourless gas. When too much carbon monoxide is breathed in, it rapidly replaces oxygen in the blood – which is deadly.

What’s more, some people mistakenly believe that leaving their garage door open allows for enough ventilation. The fact is that unless a garage is equipped with a professional-grade ventilation system (similar to those used in underground parking garages), there’s simply no “safe” way to keep a car running in a garage.

So what can you do if you want to start your drive off warm and toasty – instead of freezing and shivering? Follow these steps:

 1. Remove your car completely from your garage (i.e. don’t just reverse it out so that the muffler is extended onto the driveway).

2. When 100% of your car is out of the garage, close the garage door with your remote

3. Though it may seem strange, it’s best not to turn on your heater, because this robs heat from your engine. Besides, blasting your car’s interior with cold air isn’t going to help!

4. Exit your car and head back into your house for about one minute.

Of course, make sure you lock your car! Car thieves love winter, because all they have to do is walk up to cars that are warming up, open the door, and drive away. Make sure this doesn’t happen to you; especially since the police aren’t going to be particularly sympathetic when they find out that you made it super easy for your car to be stolen. It could even affect your insurance claim.
