House with the garage
Posted by: admin on April 15, 2015
When it comes to choosing the right garage door for your home, there are many factors to consider -- such as material, design and colour. However, there’s another key factor that is just as important: whether or not your garage door is automatic or manual.

At Atlas Overhead Doors, we’ve sold thousands of garage doors to customers across the GTA. And while we absolutely respect that each customer has their own preferences and requirements, whenever we’re asked our opinion on whether makes sense to choose an automatic garage door instead of a manual garage door, our answer is always the same: YES!

Here are the 4 key reasons why we hold this view:

1. Convenience

Yes, you’re right: you could have guessed this one without our help! But what we’ve found, is that the “convenience factor” is quite easy to underestimate; especially when customers plan on having their garage door installed in the summer, when weather across the GTA is (usually!) pleasant and sunny most of the time. However, we all know that winter – and sometimes spring and fall, too – can be brutal in this part of the country, and that’s really when the convenience factor zooms way up. Having to exit a car when it’s -20 outside just to close your garage door isn’t anyone’s idea of fun…especially when the neighbours all have automatic garage doors!

2. Security

Because manual garage doors can be inconvenient (see #1 above), some people leave them open; especially if they’re just heading out for a few minutes to the store or to grab something to eat. Unfortunately, burglars only need a few seconds to steal all kinds of valuables, or even access your house. Furthermore, many people with manual garage doors don’t always (or even, often) lock them. This, too, is a major security risk; especially since burglars are notorious for taking the path of least resistance.

3. Value

Even if you plan on staying put for the foreseeable future, eventually you’ll almost certainly list your home on the market. An automatic garage door can add value to your home, while a manual garage door could have the opposite effect. What’s more, some home buyers will reduce their offer, because they need factor in the cost of having to purchase and install an automatic garage door opener.

4. Cost

This one is a little non-intuitive. Yes, provided that they’re identical in all other ways (i.e. size, design, style, material, colour, insulation, etc.), an automatic garage door is going to cost more than a manual garage door – that’s expected. However, when you consider that a quality garage door is designed to last for decades, the “per day” cost is really a matter of pennies. Furthermore, when you keep in mind that an automatic garage door adds value to your home (see #3 above), it may be even fractions of pennies a day over the lifespan. In this light, cost becomes a non-factor. Heck, it may even be profitable in the long run!
