Weighing The Pros And Cons
Posted by: admin on March 17, 2015
Many homeowners across the GTA have fallen in love with sectional garage doors – and it’s easy to see why! They’re stylish, functional and durable. Plus, because they’re so popular, they tend to add valuable “curb appeal” that can boost a home’s resale value.

Of course, as with all garage door types, there are a few pros and cons associated with sectional garage doors. Here’s what you should consider if you’re thinking of having one installed in your current or next home:

The Pros of Sectional Garage Doors

  • Beauty & Appeal: As noted above, sectional garage doors are very appealing, and they’re available in a huge range of designs, finishes, colors and materials. You can even add windows for either esthetic or functional purposes (such as if you plan on using the garage as work room or converting it into a den or ‘man cave’).

  • Maximize Space: Unlike hinged garage doors, sectional garage doors don’t need extra space to accommodate the door. As such, you can park your car very close to the door without impeding its ability to open and close. This is particularly important if you have a smaller garage and/or a larger car.

  • Quiet Operation: Sectional garage doors are quiet, and open and close smoothly. This may not seem like a big advantage, but when you consider that you’ll be opening and closing your garage many times on virtually a daily basis, it can quickly become your favorite feature!

  • Energy Efficient: Sectional garage doors have rubber seals on the perimeter, which prevent drafts and therefore help keep energy bills down (i.e. less heat escaping in the winter, and less cool air escaping in the summer).

  • Automation Option: You can add an automatic garage door opener to make opening and closing even easier — which comes in especially handy when it’s raining or snowing. Plus, you don’t have to install an automatic garage door when you install your sectional garage door. It can be installed later.

The Cons of Sectional Garage Doors

  • Ceiling Space: Sectional garage doors use horizontal tracks, which will take up some ceiling space. For most homeowners this really isn’t a drawback, however, as the floor space they gain more than offsets the ceiling space loss.

  • More Parts: Sectional garage doors typically have more parts and components than hinged garage doors. As such, it’s even more important to ensure that the garage door is properly maintained and lubricated.

  • Cost: Generally speaking, sectional garage doors will cost a bit more than hinged garage doors (assuming they use the same quality materials, have the same features, etc.). However, as noted above, sectional garage doors typically add value to a home. Furthermore, some prospective home buyers won’t even make an offer on a home without sectional garage doors.
