driver opens the garage with remote control

Regardless of whether your home is brand new or a vintage model, from time to time you’ll hear the occasional wind noise, or perhaps the light stamping of a squirrel racing across the roof.

Such noises are normal and, frankly, unavoidable. Just as engineers have yet to perfect the soundproof car, home builders are still working on the soundproof house.

However, there are other noises that aren’t normal; instead, they’re symptoms of a hidden problem that will eventually — and perhaps sooner than later — lead to costly repairs, and even put your family’s safety at risk. And topping the list of hidden and not-so-silent dangers are squeaky, creaky or just plain odd garage door noises.

Now, the first thing to point out is that some basic, standard garage door noise isn’t a problem. This is especially the case if you have an automatic garage door opener. Naturally, when the motor activates and the chains start to do their heavy lifting (keep in mind that garage doors are not as light as they look!), there will be some degree of noticeable — though not loud or stirring — noise.

However, the problem arises when the noise grows louder — either suddenly or gradually — or if other noises start to emerge. That’s your garage door is likely “saying” that one, some or many of the following are happening:

  • The garage door springs are starting to wear out.

Springs are a major, critical piece of you’re your overall garage door system. Any creaking or screeching sounds means that they’re being forced to work harder than they should. It could also mean that, eventually, they’ll snap or break.

  • The garage door bearings need to be replaced.

Garage door rollers require bearings to help them move smoothly and safely. However, while these bearings are generally built to last, they aren’t permanent and eventually they’ll wear out and need to be replaced.

  • The garage door needs to be re-balanced.

Garage doors are designed to be in optimal balance for two reasons: the first is that it puts as little strain as possible on the overall system, which prolongs the safe operation and overall life of the garage door; the second is that it prevents the garage door from rising or falling when it’s not supposed to (such as then you pull the emergency cord). As you can see, an imbalanced garage door is more than just a noise issue: it’s a major safety hazard.

  • Various mechanisms have come loose.

Your garage door system is comprised of numerous parts that all have to work together in order for safe, reliable operation. If your garage door wasn’t installed properly, or if it hasn’t been regularly maintained, then it’s possible that screws or hinges may have come loose. It’s also possible that the chain pulling the door open and ensuring that it closes properly and safely needs to be lubricated or tightened.

  • The garage door opener needs to be replaced.

Your garage door opener is like any other major home appliance, such as an air conditioner. As such, at some point it will reach the end of its operational lifespan and need to be replaced. A noisy garage door opener could be an indication that a replacement should happen now and not later.
