Abandoned old entrance

One of the most frequent questions we receive here at Atlas Overhead Doors is whether it’s smarter to replace, rather than repair, a damaged garage door panel. As with a lot of questions that involve garage door service, the answer is “it depends”. Generally, we recommend replacing a damaged garage door panel in light of the following key considerations:

1. The Age of Your Garage Door
Garage door life expectancy varies from several years to over two decades. If your garage door is on the older side, it’s often more cost-effective in the long run to replace a damaged panel than repair it. This is particularly the case if your model of garage door is no longer in the market, and as such trying to find an exact match could take a while – and cost a premium if/when it’s located.

2. Curb Appeal Considerations
If you might be selling your home in the next few years – which in the GTA’s red hot housing market may be a very compelling idea! – then replacement is usually a better option than repairing, since you’ll boost your home’s “curb appeal”; which can lead to higher offers and more folks vying for your beautiful home. It’s likely that you’ll recover most or all of your panel replacement costs. You may even make a profit!

3. How the Panel was Damaged
If one of your kids sent an ice cold tennis ball wide of the net and banged a panel, then there’s a good chance that repairing it will do the trick. However, if you or someone else banged it with a car or other appliance (e.g. riding snow blower, riding lawnmower, etc.) then a replacement is almost always advised in order to ensure safety.
